What is tinnitus
Tinnitus is known as an annoying internal sound emanating from the head or ear, which is a noise, ringing, or crackling sound. Some describe it as the sound of sea waves, or the sound of moving machines. Tinnitus is a symptom resulting from another disease and is not considered a disease in itself. [1] [2]
Tinnitus may affect all age groups, and statistics indicate that its incidence in adults reaches 10-15%. The elderly are the group most susceptible to it, and it is often associated with hearing loss. [1] [3]
Types of tinnitus
There are two main types of tinnitus: [1] [2] [4]
Subjective Tinnitus: It is a sound that only the patient hears and no one else can hear. This type is the most common, and it is believed to occur as a result of abnormal neural activity in the part of the brain responsible for processing auditory information.
Objective tinnitus: This type is rare, and is not only heard by the affected person, but the doctor may also be able to hear it. It usually emanates from the body itself, such as hearing the sound of blood circulation. Tinnitus is like a heartbeat in this case. It is also called pulsatile tinnitus. This type of tinnitus is often observed when calm or asleep, as the sounds decrease. External noise that may cover the tinnitus sound.
